This construction cone craft will get miles and miles of use. Whether your little worker uses them as a prop for pretend play or bowls them over in a rousing game of “deconstruction bowling” these cones are realistic looking and easy to make.

What you need:

  • Orange plastic cups
  • White or glow in the dark tape
  • Orange foam craft sheet
  • Scissors
  • Hole punch (optional)
  • tape

Step 1

Measure and cut tape to completely wrap around cup. Each stripe will likely require a different length of tape. I also used reflective tape so the kids can practice ‘night time’ construction too.

Step 2

Pull tape tightly as you wrap around cup.

Step 3

Cut foam sheet to create handle for cone. If desired, use hole punch to make handle more realistic looking. Tape handle onto cone.

Helpful hints:

  • I wrapped a string around my cups to measure what size tape I needed.
  • To help keep cups rigid during “taping” I stacked them, as a single cup tended to bend when tape was pulled taut.
  • I considered hot gluing the handle onto the cone, but found taping it allowed the handle to fold down for storage

I found my belief in the importance of pretend play through two paths. First, during my childrens’ formative years, I developed an appreciation for crafting, games and dress-up as I saw my kids confidence grow as they succeeded on their imaginary adventures.
