Time Until Ready: Under 1 Hour

Recommended Age: 3 to 8 years

Take your pretend play exploring to the deep seas! It’s not every day that you find an octopus resting on a bed of seaweed.  Your kids will love this lunch under the sea!

What you need:

  • Hot dogs
  • Sharp knife
  • Spinach pasta noodles (optional)

Step 1

Cut hot dog in half

Step 2

Cut a 1.5 inch slit thru the hot dog

Step 3

Rotate the hot dog by 1/3 way around. Six "legs" are created by cutting 3 slits thru the hot dog. We know an octopus has 8 legs, but we found 6 works best.

Step 4

cook hot dog according to package directions. "Legs" curl as the hot dog cooks.

Helpful hints:

  • Responsible adult must make the cuts and handle all cooking for this project.
  • Serving the octopus on a bed of seaweed (spinach noodles) adds to the adventure!
  • Add eyes using mustard or ketchup

I found my belief in the importance of pretend play through two paths. First, during my childrens’ formative years, I developed an appreciation for crafting, games and dress-up as I saw my kids confidence grow as they succeeded on their imaginary adventures.
