Have your little train engineer jump a rainbow railway!

Rainbow Rails Train Engineer: Activity

Using sidewalk chalk, draw the tracks: 2 long straight lines for the rails, and about 10-15 intersecting lines for the railroad ties. Draw the railroad ties in several alternating colors. For our game, I choose 3 colors to use. I placed the ties about 10 inches apart. You just want to be sure the ties are drawn far enough apart so that your little engineer will be able to jump over the lines without it being too much of a challenge.

Rainbow Rails Train Engineer: Activity
  • Jump over each railroad tie, calling out the colors
  • Walk only on the rails, avoiding all the colors of the railroad ties
  • Jump only on top of each railroad tie
  • Jump down the track only on top of one color of tie
  • Jump on each color EXCEPT one
  • Give them a pattern to jump (jump on blue, then red, then blue...)

My preschooler liked simply running as fast as he could over the tracks. My 6 year old liked taking a running start and jumping only on one color. The more you play, the more variations you’ll create!
